DoT seeks approval to classify telecom products as ‘security sensitive’

The telecom department (DoT) has sought the defence ministry's approval to classify select telecom products as 'security sensitive' in the run-up to mandating 100 percent domestic sourcing for private sector gear procurements.
A panel headed by advisor (technology) R K Bhatnagar has been mandated to finalise a list of 14 security-sensitive products for all telecom licensees in consultation with the defence ministry. The list will provide a detailed rationale of why a specific product has been tagged 'security sensitive'.

A committee headed by advisor (technology) has finalised a draft notification for security sensitive telecom products with rationale. Telecom Commission chairman R Chandrashekhar wrote in an internal memo to Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma saying. "I shall appreciate an early concurrence of the defence ministry before this notification is issued.”
