On 27 November, the telecom regulator TRAI released its recommendations favouring net neutrality. Although, many telcos raised their voice against it, the telecomRegulatorTRAI Chairman R.S. Sharma has vouched his full support in favour of net neutrality.
Sharma said: “No one owns the Internet, so, it should be open and accessible to everyone. The Internet is an important platform for the country, especially in the context of innovation, start-ups, online transactions, government applications and the Digital India programme. So, it is important that the platform is kept open and free and not cannibalised.”
This is aremarkable move, as even the USA has proposed to roll back the Net neutrality rules of 2015. Sharma feels TRAI had kept the Indian context in mind while framing its recommendations.
TRAI Chairman said: “We have 500 million Net subscribers and 1.3 billion population, so big things will happen on the Internet and it is important to keep it open.”
