The telecom regulator TRAI released recommendations on net neutrality on 27 November. While many are hailing it as a great move, telecom operators are not happy. They called it a “piece meal” approach and may contact DoT’s intervention on their issues.
TRAI wants non-discriminatory internet access, known as net neutrality. Telcos called it a ‘draconian’ move which can potentially disrupt business and smooth delivery of telecom services if cleared by the government.
Rajan Mathews, director general of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), said, “TRAI’s suggestion to set up a committee to review and decide on network management violations is a heavy handed approach that is unnecessarily bureaucratic especially since DoT is well positioned to investigate any violation of licence conditions and has the necessary enforcement mechanisms in place”.
