Speaking at the Global Conference on Cyberspace Security, the IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that Gate Locking by Facebook’s Free Basics cannot be approved in the country. He explained that the idea behind Free Basics was that everything will be free, namely eduction, health, entertainment and others, if one enters the Net through one gate i.e. Facebook.
He added that people's right of accessing the Internet is "non-negotiable" and the government will not allow any company to restrict people's entry to the worldwide web.
The Minister said: "When I was handling communications department, Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook CEO) met me a number of times with the idea of Free Basics." But we cannot approve this.
