Editor’s resignation raises question over Prasar Bharti’s autonomy

Prasar Bharati’s much anticipated move to make national news channel DD News more professional and autonomous faced a roadblock before it could start bearing fruits. One of the editors of its newly-launched Prime Band comprising prime time news, debates and discussions aired between 8 pm and 10 pm Ajai Shukla, resigned on March 29, 2013.
Shukla however refused to comment on the reasons leading to his sudden exit but if insiders are to be believed it is due to the interference from the senior officers working at the orders of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. They said the newly appointed team was promised full editorial autonomy and freedom from interference, including the administrators running the news channel and I&B Ministry, but things changed a couple of weeks ago.

Two circulars stating ‘operating procedure/guidelines’ were issued on March 13 and 14 on behalf of Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar. The first said, to ensure a smooth functioning of the organisation, plan for discussion on the programme and list of guests should be finalised and circulated to all concerned persons.
But, a stricter circular issued on the next day stated that no programme will be aired without the approval of DG (News)/ ADG (News) and no guests will be invited without their consent either.
