Television sets in more than 2.5 lakh homes will go blank on 23 April as mandatory implementation regarding use of digital signals comes in force across four cities of Gujarat including Surat.
It was imminent that the households not installing set top boxes would be unable to watch television programmes after high court last week declined to extend the deadline for installation.
Cable operators of the city had earlier put the count of cable connections at 1.75 lakh which was wrong as they themselves installed four lakh set top boxes after the Central government made the installation mandatory in 38 cities. There are still more than 2.5 lakh households where the set top boxes are to be installed.
"We have given clear cut instructions to cable operators not to relay television programmes directly by cable. If they are found guilty they will be severely punished," said SG Nayak, who is deputy mamlatdar of entertainment department.
"Since there is no extension, relay of entertainment channels to those houses that don't have a set top box will stop from Monday midnight," said collector J P Shivhare.
