The leading telecom operators have requested the telecom regulator TRAI to factor in ‘call muting’ while monitoring call drops on a Voice over LTE (VoLTE) network in order to have a fair comparison with the quality of services on different networks.
The new stringent norms were made effective from October 1. TRAI is currently receiving telcos’ data on quality of services based on, and will shortly bring out a report.
Telcos believe that this should be taken into account while arriving at call drop rates, otherwise data could show that carriers that have 2G and 3G networks, apart from 4G, have higher rate of calls dropped, compared to an all-VoLTE network, leading to adverse effects for incumbent carriers, even though the case may not be accurately so.
