Even after gaining support from Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on the opinion of giving clearance nod to Kalanithi Maran promoted Sun TV Network, MHA has decided to stick to its original decision of not giving clearance to the Network’s 33 channels, on the ground that investigation shows serious charges of money laundering against Kalanithi Maran. Hence, the Ministry said that it is against the opinion made by AG on the issue.
Thus, the MHA has now lobbed the ball in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting’s (MIB) court, stating that the latter has to move the file back to the ministry for fresh review, after which a final call can be expected.
Earlier this week, the Attorney General had opined that denial of security clearance to the group’s channels on the basis of corruption charges against its owner is illegal, as neither the owner nor the Network was a threat to the nation’s security. The opinion was given after the I&B Ministry had sought for the Attorney General’s opinion on the matter. Although the judgement made by the AG is not binding, yet his opinion is sought when views of two ministries differ on a subject matter.
However, according to the sources, the MIB is gauging the AG’s opinion in case there is still disagreement between the two ministries; one could well see Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervening into the matter.
