Telugu matinee idol and popular star of yesteryears, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, popularly known as ANR, died on 22 January at a private hospital in Hyderabad.
He was 91 and had been suffering from cancer.
With a career spanning six decades and 256 films, ANR was a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke awards for his contribution to Indian cinema.
ANR and NTR—his contemporary and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N.T. Rama Rao—are regarded as the two pillars of the Telugu film industry. Together, they enjoyed unprecedented stardom for nearly three decades starting from the late 1950s.
ANR was credited with moving the Telugu film industry from its former base of Madras (now Chennai) to Hyderabad at a time when the Andhra Pradesh capital hardly had any infrastructure related to the film industry.
Born on 20 September 1923 in Venkata Raghava Puram of Krishna district in the then Madras Presidency, ANR made his debut with Dharmapatni in 1941.
He went on to star in celebrated blockbusters such as Devadasu, Maya Bazaar, Missamma, Laila Majnu, Prema Nagar, Premabhishekham and Meghasandesham.
