IRT shows HbbTV second screen app

The Institut für Rundfunktechnik has launched a second screen app that uses a QR code to connect to a companion device from an HbbTV service.
IRT’s Second-screen framework allows the transmission of information related to a programme in sync with the broadcast. The application is launched through a menu item that presents a QR code pop up on the TV. Scanning the code enables a connection between the two devices that allows communication between the website launched on the second screen and the HbbTV application on the TV.
The organisation says the system does not rely on a local device discovery mechanism and does not face the difficulties of a local network installation.
Users can interact with the HbbTV application from the second screen as well as the TV remote control.
