The Anandabazar Patrika (ABP) group is to launch two more Indian regional language news channels in Punjabi and Odia to add to its existing three.
There is enough room for more regional channels in Punjab and Odisha after digitalization, say some experts. Local stations, plus national networks ETV and Zee, currently dominate regional language TV news in these states.
ABP bought out News Corp-owned Star's stake in the Media Content and Communications Services (MCCS) platform a year ago when the two companies dissolved their joint venture. The Kolkata-based media group also dropped the Star prefix and rebranded its Hindi, Bengali and Marathi news channels ABP News, ABP Ananda and ABP Majha.
ABP has previously also experimented with general entertainment in the form of the Bengali channel Sanada TV, which it launched in July 2011. However, the channel was shut down at the end of 2012.
Among its publishing assets, ABP also owns the Bengali daily newspaper Ananda Bazar Patrika, English daily The Telegraph, and runs two book publishing houses Anada and Penguin India.
