Prasar Bharati Member (Finance) has written to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) seeking amendment to the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007 to bring Test matches under the purview of mandatory sharing.
Doordarshan missing out on the telecast of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar`s farewell Test against West Indies as the existing rules do not classify Test matches as sporting events of national importance.
Pandit in his letter to MIB Additional Secretary J S Mathur stated that the decision to telecast only ODI matches was guided by the legal position as well as the revenue loss that the pubcaster would have incurred for covering the Tests.
Pandit said that the pubcaster would have had to pay a licence fee of Rs. 9.25 crore ( Rs. 92.5 million) to broadcast rights holder Star India. He also stated that the pubcaster would have had to write off the amount it had paid as licence as there was very little scope for earning ad revenue from the Test series.
This situation, Pandit rued, could have been avoided had the ministry classified Test matches under sporting events of national importance in the Sports broadcast bill.
