Electronic firms want faster process for BIS tag

Electronic hardware companies want the Government to speed up the process for getting compulsory certification for their products from the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS).
While the Government has declined to extend the deadline for product certification, the process to get a tag from the BIS delaying product launches, they feel.

The Government had decided not to extend the deadline as it had already extended it twice last year. The last date for complying with the norm was January 3. The Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT) had been requesting the Government for another extension, but it was not accepted.
The issue is that there is still not any set process for the registrations. Therefore, there should be a clear timeline for the registration like one day to seven days.
He said the process could be more cumbersome with the Government planning to add more products such as medical equipment to the list.
According to an earlier order, electronic companies were supposed to get 15 listed electronic and information technology goods registered with the BIS under the Compulsory Registration Order.
