Internet users in India cross 200 m

According to latest data from IMRB and Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), this rise in user base is 40 per cent over 2012 when total number of Internet users stood at around 120 million. Further, the report said that by this year-end, total Internet users would be around 213 million and another 40 million will be added next year.
India still lags behind China, which has 300 million Internet users but is expected to overtake the US, making it the second largest Internet user base globally.

Rajan Anandan, Chairman, IAMAI said: “Internet in India took more than a decade to move from 10 to 100 million but only three years from 100 to 200 million.”
Currently, that is pegged at 110 million and it is estimated to reach 130 million by this year-end. Of this, number of people using their phones to access the Internet is estimated to hit 103 million by this year-end, according to the report. Companies, which use Internet to do business, feel that this user base will further swell.
This is the significant landmark because this puts us almost at par with US and considering the speed at which smartphone adoption is growing, according to Sundeep Misra, founder of VMC Technologies, a company that provides telephony services using cloud computing.
According to the report, in rural India there were 68 million Internet users in October and this is estimated to reach 72 million by end of this year.
