Reduction in Digital Headends with Digitization – Report

Digitization resulted in several changes on ground with its implementation. While some changes seemed positive and some negative and there was huge debate, the digitization did succeed in its implementation smoothly.
The recent study shows the impact of digitization on head ends, which have reduced in number due to huge investment in both the boxes and the headend itself. There were around 120 digital headends operational in Delhi before digitization which have now reduced to only 20 headends. Corporate MSOs like DEN, Hathway and IN Cable have connected all their networks to one centralized head end to bring down their running and maintenance cost.

On the other hand, few big operators have joined together and installed their own head end to save the link charges being paid to MSOs, however they are struggling to run the show as ground collection is really poor and the carriage fee as expected is not flowing in. Considering these challenges, some of the head ends have already merged with Corporate MSOs and few others are available for sale or are looking for JV partners. Similar scenario has been noticed in Mumbai.
Southern part of the country however seems to have different impact, the number of headends have increased in cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad. There were 8 headends in Bangalore which have increased to 10 even after the merger of Hathway and YouTelecom.
